How Does The Brain Sleep?

Giulio Tononi, professor of psychiatry at University of Wisconsin Madison, has been using noninvasive transcranial magnetic stimulation to activate certain parts of the brain while an individual sleeps. The reactions in other parts of the brain are then measured. During deep sleep, stimulation caused almost no stimulation of adjacent areas. According to Toroni, "During deep sleep early in the night the response is short-lived and doesn't propagate at all."

Marcello Massimini, a researcher at Wisconsin University's Psychiatric Institute and Clinics says that brain is allowing the synapses to rest.

"This process would allow cortical circuits to eliminate noisy synapses and renormalize in order to be ready for the next day," says Massimini.

Findings published in the journal Science.
