This section of Sleep11 is devoted to helping you understand about sleep. Here we will focus on how sleep works, and the processes that are involved in sleep.
First, review the definition of What Is Sleep?
By Kathy Cash
Not surprisingly, the longer our normal sleep cycle goes undisturbed, the better for our health and well-being. Whether you are a shiftworker, parent with restless kids, a student cramming for exams, or deal with any of the other myriad reasons for not sleeping soundly, sensible napping may play an important role in your sleeping routine.
Sleep is actually a very complicated process. Sleep has several components, and the ratio of time spent in these different types of sleep is very important. If the ratio of time in the various stages of sleep is changed, the sleep is not as restful as it should be. Some diseases, some drugs, and outside influences may disturb this complicated and delicate balance.
Fortunately, if the body is given the chance to get enough undisturbed sleep, it will automatically adjust the ratios of the different kinds of sleep, and eventually resume a normal balance.

Welcome to Europe, where a flight is sometimes cheaper than a bus ride. Seriously. It was cheaper for me to fly from Stansted Airport near London to Jerez, Spain, than to take the bus, within the United Kingdom, from Bournemouth to London. With Ryanair, my round-trip flight to Spain came to a grand total of 28.67 (approximately $50).
Conscious thought depends on the ability of the brain to integrate information - Giulio Tononi, Wisconsin-Madison University - Research Into How The Brain Rests
Giulio Tononi, professor of psychiatry at University of Wisconsin Madison, has been using noninvasive transcranial magnetic stimulation to activate certain parts of the brain while an individual sleeps. The reactions in other parts of the brain are then measured. During deep sleep, stimulation caused almost no stimulation of adjacent areas. According to Toroni, "During deep sleep early in the night the response is short-lived and doesn't propagate at all."
Marcello Massimini, a researcher at Wisconsin University's Psychiatric Institute and Clinics says that brain is allowing the synapses to rest.

Pandiculation
by John Dooley at 7/29/2005 10:19 pm
Pandiculation has existed since the dawn of man. It affects humans, reptiles, birds, and most mammals. Although most human beings have been known to experience pandiculation while still in the womb (as early as 11 weeks after conception), we achieve pandiculatory contagiousness between the first and second years of life. It is believed that the entire human population has already been affected.
The average human will spend about one third of their life sleeping. But this is just an average. Some people will spend more time sleeping, some people will spend less time sleeping. Sleep needs change as we age, and as we encounter different events in our life.
Most people probably need more than 8 hours a night sleep. One study showed that full rested adults sleep about 8 1/4 hours a night.
